#SDGAction221
Biodiversity, Forests and other Ecosystems
Description/achievement of initiative

The ambitious goal is to map Brazil's biodiversity before it disappears. We are starting with the sequencing of its flora initially focused on (but not limited to) the Atlantic Rainforest biome. Arborem in conjunction with the iGRF (instituto Genomico de Recursos Florestais) will commit to mapping the first 1,000 species in the hope that we attract public, private or corporate supporters around the world to map a further 9,000. If we manage that then Arborem's parent group will fund another 1,000 species again looking for matching support. The ambitious goal being to get to 50,000 by 2020

Implementation methodologies

Using the world's leading supplier of genetic sequencing equipment we will start mapping the biodiversity of Santuário dos Três Reinos' the Atlantic Rainforest reserve of 5 million square metres within the Greater Metropolitan Recife area. This reserve belongs to the parent group of Arborem, which is part of the controlling group of PETRA Energia, Latin America's largest privately held oil & gas company. Arborem has the pledged support of its parent group which is also totally committed to the biodiversity and regeneration of Brazil's flora. The iGRU is headed by Brazil's leading molecular biologist and geneticist Dr Genaro Ribeiro de Paiva who until recently was visiting professor at UCLA. Arborem's development in this area is led by Charles Frewen a lifelong campaigner and supporter of the Brazilian Rainforest and the Cerrado.
