Guidelines for Environmental Sustainability for the ICT Sector
Description/achievement of initiative

ITU is coordinating a project to establish environmental sustainability guidelines for the ICT sector. The project will provide ICT organizations with a checklist of sustainability requirements; guiding them in efforts to improve their eco-efficiency, and ensuring fair and transparent sustainability reporting.
Source: International Telecommunication Union
The impetus for this project is that the ICT sector is increasingly being asked a number of customers, investors, governments and other stakeholders to report on sustainability performance but there is lack of an agreed upon standardized measurement that would simplify and streamline this reporting specifically for the ICT sector.

The project focuses on development of guidelines and a standardized checklist of sustainability requirements specific to the ICT sector that will become a contribution to ITU-T Study Group 5 with the goal of developing a global standard in this area.

The standard provides a set of agreed upon sustainability requirements for ICT companies that allows for a more objective reporting of how sustainability is practiced in the ICT sector in these key areas: sustainable buildings, sustainable ICT, sustainable products, sustainable services, end of life management, general specifications and assessment framework for environmental impacts of the ICT sector.
