A PROMISE TO TAKE ACTION NOW OR IN THE FUTURE
Our commitment to take action at Lagos Business School is as old as the School itself. As the Dean, Dr Enase Okonedo pointed out in a personal interview:
“…right from the very beginning we set out to raise ethical and responsible managers and leaders who will make a positive difference in society. It is a self-imposed mandate that speaks to our ambition to positively impact on the practice of management in Nigeria…It is a huge responsibility, but knowing that we’re about the only school in the country where they can get this kind of education, and our belief that there’s no institution that is better placed to achieve this mandate than us provides us with inspiration to continue doing what we do.”
Lagos Business School embeds humanistic management education in its curriculum by teaching business ethics in all programmes of ten days and longer. Business ethics stresses the point that organisations have responsibilities towards employees, customers, competitors and society at large, rather than existing only to maximise profit for shareholders. In addition to ethics, LBS has also developed a required course in philosophical anthropology on the MBA programme, titled “The Nature of Human Beings”. The rationale for this course, which is taken at the beginning of the programme, is to provide students with a fuller and more realistic account of the human person, and to stimulate critical thinking when engaging with business and economic theories and concepts later on in the programme, and even after graduation.
To ensure that the School’s teaching in this area is grounded in cutting-edge research that is also locally relevant, a Centre for Corporate Social Responsibility has been established, which also hosts programmes aimed at enhancing a holistic understanding of the role of business in society.
Since 2011, we have organised an annual two-day workshop on corporate social responsibility and sustainability for members of faculty to stimulate debates and share with colleagues, innovative ways of communicating humanistic values in different subjects. This exercise has been a huge success as we have embedded modules in Business Ethics, Sustainability, Corporate Social Responsibility and Corporate Governance in the Full-time and Executive MBA curricula, as well as in all our executive programmes as shown in the table below.

A COMMITMENT TO TRANSPARENCY THROUGH ANNUAL REPORTING ON PROGRESS
We commit to start sharing annual reports on our progress at the Lagos Business School in 2013 using the recommended guidelines for this initiative. Also in 2013, a new section will be dedicated to reporting our progress in integrating sustainability in our teaching, research and operations in “the Pan-African University Annual Report” and “Footprints” (the official alumni journal). Doing this will offer our institution as an example for the managers and leaders we interact with and their organisations to emulate.
DESCRIPTION OF TIME-BOUND TARGETS/GOALS THAT CAN BE MEASURED FOR SUCCESS
1.Reduce the use of paper at LBS by 10% by March 2013. Paper usage increased by 3.5% between 2010 and 2011.
We will approach this goal in four phases.
Phase 1: Gather and analyse information to aid proper tracking of set targets
Phase 2: Foster attitudinal change through communication and sensitisation
Phase 3: Rethink the operations and processes
Phase 4: Re-engineer our systems through process automation
2.Zero use of plastic water bottles at the Lagos Business School by September 2012 and encourage the use of jugs and water dispensers with refillable bottles.
Implementation methodologiesTHE CSR CENTRE will continue to engage the public and private sectors in the global discuss on sustainability through the annual CSR Conference which was launched in 2011, the CSR Master Class.
We have just selected a team of faculty and staff to drive the Higher Education Sustainability Initiative, the PRME and other sustainability initiatives which the School has committed to.
