ICTs for Sustainable Energy (ISEP)
Description/achievement of initiative

The ISEP will focus on realizing the information and communication technology industry's role in achieving the goals of the UN's SE4All initiative. ISEP is supported by the US government.

Implementation methodologies

The Secretariat will be housed at The Climate Group. The founding partners will be supplemented by others following launch, especially at the country/region level. Resources are being pledged by industry associations, governments, and others.

ISEP will operate on two levels: (1) a global partnership and capacity-building platform; and (2) country/region-focused intensive policy projects.

The global partnership objectives include: generating research and educational materials; generating case studies; supporting projects undertaken at the country/region level; and developing means of tracking the impact of ICTs in countries/regions where local partnerships are undertaken. The specific activities of the country/region partnerships will vary by location and the priorities of the local partners, but will include: demonstrating how specific ICT applications can improve energy efficiency in the local economy and can help countries meet their sustainability objectives; and, identifying drivers, including government procurement and other smart public policies to expand the role of ICT in ensuring access to sustainable energy.

Progress reports
Goal 7
2013
The immediate organizational goals include implementation objectives and work plan (July 2012), recruitment of partners for country/regional partnerships (Fall 2012), develop the ISEP website and other capacity-building services (Fall 2012), and begin operations of 2-5 country/regional partnerships (early 2013).
2020
The SMART 2020 report showed that 15% emissions savings is possible by 2020, and ISEP will demonstrate ICTs impact toward meeting or exceeding that potential by tracking activities across regions.
