Description/achievement of initiative

ACCIONA (Spain) commits to replicate a multi-stakeholder public-private partnership programme to provide access to renewable sources of energy to communities in emerging economies.

Implementation methodologies

The ACCIONA Microenergy Foundation was created to focus ACCIONA’s efforts on social development activities in order to facilitate sustainable access to basic services such as energy, (in areas not covered by the national grid), and water, in isolated rural areas in developing countries.

“Luz en Casa” is a programme of implantation of Solar Home Systems based on a self-financing model.

The “Luz en Casa” (Light at Home) is a programme inagurated in November 2010, with 610 SHS in operation, and developed by ACCIONA Microenergy Foundation in collaboration with Perú Microenergía, a non-profit peruvian association with the aim to be a sustainable energy service social micro-enterprise. The aim is to benefit 3,500 underprivileged families (around 15,000 people), initially, in the Cajamarca region, in northern Peru.

The ACCIONA Microenergy Foundation collaborates with Perú Microenegía providing economic resources during the investment and start-up period, and technical and management support.

The “Luz en Casa” programme aims at providing access to basic electric services of lighting and communication (radio and TV) by installing Solar Home Systems (SHS) comprising a solar panel, a regulator, three energy efficient lamps and a sealed battery.

The system powers low-consumption electrical appliances in each home, using a fee for service model. To ensure that the system is economically sustainable, Perú Microenergía charges users of the home solar systems an affordable fee. Once the project is completed, Perú Microenergía will use the fee revenues to pay for operating and maintenance costs and to replace equipment as it becomes obsolete.
