Available evidence on the implementation of National Sustainable Development Strategies (NSDS) points out that countries are at different stages of implementation — some being more advanced than others. The country reports written along the preparatory process to the Rio+20 Conference highlight some of the implementation challenges. The outcome document for Rio+20 reinforces the role of NSDS, underlining the role that green economy policies can play in the elaboration of these strategies, as well as the importance of knowledge exchange and capacity building in this regard.

Against this background, the UNOSD is organizing an International Workshop on Strengthening Planning and Implementation Capacities for Sustainable Development in the Post-Rio+20 Context. The workshop will be held in Incheon, Republic of Korea, on 14-16 November 2012.

Following the format of a multi-stakeholder dialogue, the workshop will bring together representatives of governments, UN system entities, multilateral and regional development banks, policy think tanks and network, private sector and civil society. The objectives are to: (i) share experiences and lessons learned in implementing sustainable development at national and local levels; (ii) gauge the efficacy and suitability of existing knowledge and capacity building efforts; and (iii) create opportunities for building partnerships in knowledge sharing in the area of planning and implementation of sustainable development.
