On 25 January 2012 the Secretary-General announced a Five Year Action Agenda for the second term (2012-2016), which listed transport as one of six building blocks for sustainable development.

As follow-up to Rio+20 the Open Working Group was set up for the purpose of identifying a set of Sustainable Development Goals to supersede or complement the Millennium Development Goals, which come to term in 2015. It is important to consider how sustainable transport fits in with possible Sustainable Development Goals as well as the wider post-2015 Development Agenda, which is being elaborated by the UN-Secretary General, aided by the High Level Panel of Eminent Persons on the post-2015 Development Agenda. Various formulations of an SDG for Sustainable Transport have been discussed and proposed with varying levels of emphasis on the environmental, social and/or economic dimension of sustainable transport. This side event is part of a wider set of consultations aimed at developing a common understanding of the contribution to sustainable development. Presentations will inform participants on the discussion on sustainable transport and the post 2015 development agenda, including possible SDGs. It will seek the views of participants on this topic.
