Pacific Islands Leaders Meeting (PALM)
Description/achievement of initiative

Pacific Islands Leaders Meeting is a summit-level meeting which has been held every three years since 1997. Leaders openly discuss various issues that Pacific Island Countries(PICs) are facing in order to build close cooperative relationships and forge a bond of friendship between Japan and PICs. The 7th Pacific Islands Leaders Meeting (PALM7) was held in Iwaki, Fukushima, Japan, on 22 and 23 May, 2015. Implementation methodologies

Japan has steadily implemented cooperation and its commitments, inter alia by ODA. In order to follow-up and evaluate the implementation of the key PALM7 outcomes, as well as to start the preparatory process for PALM8, the third Ministerial Interim Meeting is planning to be held in 2016.

Arrangements for Capacity-Building and Technology Transfer

At the PALM7, Government of Japan announced its aim to implement human resource development and people to people exchange of 4000 people Pacific Island Countries over the three years.

Coordination mechanisms/governance structure

Government of Japan is leading preparation process through the meeting of the Chair of PIF (Pacific Islands Forum), Post Forum Dialogue and Ministerial Interim Meeting in this regard.
