ACCESS- Alliance of Civil Society Organizations for Clean Energy Access
Description/achievement of initiative

The initiative is governed through a Secretariat- presently consisting of a Coordinator and 14 Coordination Group members. Members on the Coordination Group represent strong CSO voices from across local, National, Regional and International organizations, with a good gender balance. Members were selected from amongst the membership base through a transparent and competitive process against a clear Terms of reference. Initial plans for the development and expansion of the Secretariat (over the next 2 quarters) include the following: - Addition of 3 Regional Coordinators (with East Africa, West Africa, Southern Africa being the focus regions) - Creation of Thematic strategy groups to lead the Alliance efforts on focus activities (Knowledge management, Capacity building, Policy advocacy- AfDB policies and SDG7 implementation) - Creation of Thematic Working groups for all members to engage and collaborate on each of the focus activities and stay updated

Implementation methodologies

In order to achieve the above mentioned goals, the focus activities for ACCESS include: - Research and Learning - Capacity building and Partnership facilitation - Policy Advocacy 1. Strengthen the knowledge base on: -- Integrated energy service planning and delivery -- Enabling environment conditions to deliver energy for last mile groups -- Best practices; generate and share knowledge from current experiences 2. Build capacity of: -- Decision-makers, Businesses, Financiers, CSOs in other development sectors -- On energy planning, delivery and ecosystems 3. Convene stakeholders and influence activities: -- Multi-stakeholder discussions with Government, Business, CSOs -- SDG7 implementation and AfDB investments on energy access The initiative involves Knowledge Management and Networking, Capacity building and sharing of best practices, Regional and International Coordination and Advocacy.

1.2 - By 2030, reduce at least by half the proportion of men, women and children of all ages living in poverty in all its dimensions according to national definitions
1.3 - Implement nationally appropriate social protection systems and measures for all, including floors, and by 2030 achieve substantial coverage of the poor and the vulnerable

5.1 - End all forms of discrimination against all women and girls everywhere
5.5 - Ensure women’s full and effective participation and equal opportunities for leadership at all levels of decision-making in political, economic and public life
5.b - Enhance the use of enabling technology, in particular information and communications technology, to promote the empowerment of women
Goal 7
7.1 - By 2030, ensure universal access to affordable, reliable and modern energy services
7.2 - By 2030, increase substantially the share of renewable energy in the global energy mix
7.3 - By 2030, double the global rate of improvement in energy efficiency
7.a - By 2030, enhance international cooperation to facilitate access to clean energy research and technology, including renewable energy, energy efficiency and advanced and cleaner fossil-fuel technology, and promote investment in energy infrastructure and clean energy technology
7.b - By 2030, expand infrastructure and upgrade technology for supplying modern and sustainable energy services for all in developing countries, in particular least developed countries, small island developing States, and land-locked developing countries, in accordance with their respective programmes of support
Goal 8
8.2 - Achieve higher levels of economic productivity through diversification, technological upgrading and innovation, including through a focus on high-value added and labour-intensive sectors
8.3 - Promote development-oriented policies that support productive activities, decent job creation, entrepreneurship, creativity and innovation, and encourage the formalization and growth of micro-, small- and medium-sized enterprises, including through access to financial services
Goal 17
17.16 - Enhance the global partnership for sustainable development, complemented by multi-stakeholder partnerships that mobilize and share knowledge, expertise, technology and financial resources, to support the achievement of the sustainable development goals in all countries, in particular developing countries
17.17 - Encourage and promote effective public, public-private and civil society partnerships, building on the experience and resourcing strategies of partnerships
