SDGs Learning, Training and Practice, 11 - 15 July 2016

To effectively begin the implementation of Agenda 2030, access to knowledge and information will be essential for policy makers and community leaders to design well-informed and effective policies and strategies.

Profiting from the presence of a broad range of participants attending the HLPF, the Division for Sustainable Development in the UN Department of Economic and Social Affairs (UNDESA) and the United Nations Institute for Training and Research (UNITAR) are co-organizing the SDGs Learning, Training and Practice sessions – a capacity building, networking and experience-sharing event, with high-level speakers and experts on crucial topics related to the implementation of Agenda 2030 and the SDGs.

The SDGs Learning, Training and Practice sessions, which will take place from 11 to 15 July 2016, will focus on sessions supporting the HLPF theme: "Ensuring that no one is left behind". It will aim to provide a strategic vision and practical knowledge to participants on how to find effective sustainable solutions for their community, be it a country, city, village or neighbourhood.

The SDGs Learning, Training and Practice sessions will aim to advance:

  • Knowledge and skills acquisition
  • Networking
  • Sharing experiences and peer to peer collaboration
  • Learning about practical actions and best practices
  • Capacity building
  • Practical policy integration and coherence

Opening of the HLPF SDGs Learning, Training and Practice - Getting ready to implement the 2030 Agenda: Developing a SDG Roadmap
SDGs Learning, Training and Practice
It is recognized that most countries are already putting in place national development plan and strategies aligned with the Sustainable Development Goals to facilitate their implementation, monitoring and reporting on progress. These systems can be updated to incorporate any new or revised indicators that are identified in the process of tailoring the SDGs to national contexts. This short course will focus on the process of mainstreaming the SDGs into country planning processes and the localization of targets and indicators to fit a country’s needs.

How to do business differently? Levering all forces to leave no one behind
SDGs Learning, Training and Practice
The training session will combine inputs from subject matter experts in the field of capacity development for Agenda 2030 with interactive peer discussions, leveraging the expertise and experience of participants in the room. The SDSN Handbook “Getting started with SDG implementation” will be introduced as a core resource by one of its authors.

This session will draw on the experiences of Small Island developing States and Least Developed countries. The session will showcase examples and leadership where LDCs have advanced integrated policy frameworks for addressing development, disaster and climate risks, for instance; or where small island developing states have forged regional strategies that show how disaster risk, climate and development can be approached through a coherent and integrated manner.

Advocacy Training Guide Women’s empowerment
SDGs Learning, Training and Practice
Gender mainstreaming and advocacy at the UN requires knowledge about how the UN works with governments and civil society concerning policy formulation and implementation. This advocacy training focuses on how to accomplish gender mainstreaming and women’s empowerment to ensure coherence in all of the SDG goals. It provides an introduction to the UN, SDGs, and political processes as well as a gender perspective on implementation at the national level. It especially emphasizes the interlinkages between Goal 5 and all of the other goals, including those on cities, climate change, and partnerships.

Harmonizing global, regional and national commitments to implement the SDGs
SDGs Learning, Training and Practice
The objective of the session is to discuss the features of the new types of integrated planning required to reflect key commitments coming out of long-term and midterm national priority-setting exercises. It will help identify areas that offer opportunities for promoting such an integrated approach to planning and policy-making. Finally, the session will provide space for sharing experiences and good practices from a number of countries that started addressing key inter-linkages between different commitments. Experience sharing will emphasize the importance of accounting for the specificities of the national settings in any priority-setting and planning exercise. At the closing of the programme, UNITAR will hold a 30-minute B.Y.O.P.C.: (Bring Your Own PC) learning session to showcase learning products and tools that can support the harmonization of global, regional and national commitments at the country level.

Solving social challenges using human centred/game design thinking
SDGs Learning, Training and Practice
Human-Centered Design is a great way of engaging citizens in innovative processes to produce solutions to development challenges.

UNDP Egypt and the Engagement Lab will facilitate a hands-on session where participants learn about global best practices in the use of innovative methodologies to solve local development challenges, including Human-Centered and Game Design Thinking. There will also be a practical workshop to understand the basics of Human Centred Design and Game Design Thinking.

Participants will explore the use of Game Design Thinking as a tool for advancing social change. Games and playful interventions have proven to be successful in motivating positive social change by altering the incentive structure for civic participation and social mobilization all over the world. If designed purposively, the outcomes of games can go well beyond content learning and actually help facilitate personal behaviour change and advocacy.

Supporting national development strategies as countries deliver on the Sustainable Development Goals
SDGs Learning, Training and Practice
A pilot approach to supporting countries as they deliver on the Sustainable Development Goals will be introduced. This innovative framework combines strategic foresight methods, integrated policy analysis, capacity building and stakeholder engagement to develop or adapt a national strategy towards achieving the SDGs. Not only the framework is innovative but also the process; the country works in partnership with the OECD experts in different stages: from strategic direction setting, through planning and measurement, to implementation and monitoring.

Data Revolution Roadmaps for SD: how countries can harness data to achieve SD for all
SDGs Learning, Training and Practice
The Partnership, with the support of its members, will host a participatory and consultative multistakeholder training event featuring representatives from governments, civil society, international organizations and the private sector. The training will provide a platform for learning and sharing about country level processes, experiences, lessons and needs. It will also seek to advance the development of the toolbox to further support the development of SDG Data Revolution Roadmaps that enable action at the national and subnational levels to harness the data revolution for sustainable development around the world.

Strengthening national reviews and M&E systems for the SDGs
SDGs Learning, Training and Practice
The objective of this session is to discuss the challenges of building mechanisms to ensure regular and inclusive reviews of progress at national and sub-national levels. It will also cover in more detail processes that will need to be put in place to strengthen national data systems and ensure effective monitoring of the SDGs at the national level, including the challenges of promoting data disaggregation and reflecting the linkages between different goals and targets. The third component to be addressed is the strengthening of evaluation for the implementation of the SDGs and critical challenges in this area.
