The Economist organized the fifth World Ocean Summit in Playa del Carmen, Mexico, from 7 to 9 March 2018, bringing together political leaders and policymakers, heads of global business, scientists, NGOs and multilaterals. The United Nations Secretary-General’s Special Envoy for the Ocean, H.E. Mr. Peter Thomson, participated in the Summit, including the Keynote Discussion: Taking Stock from 2017. On 7 March 2018, the Special Envoy delivered a keynote address at the Asamblea del Océano Pacifico, highlighting SDG 14 and the Communities of Ocean Action. |

HIGH LEVEL SYMPOSIUM ON CAPACITY BUILDING FOR MARITIME SECURITY

THE PRINCE OF WALES HOSTS A MEETING ON CORAL REEF HEALTH

On 14 February 2018, the Prince of Wales’ International Sustainability Unit organized an event in London on “IYOR 2018- An Opportunity for Increasing Coral Reef Resilience”, followed by an IYOR 2018 workshop. The Special Envoy participated in these meetings and highlighted the important role of the Communities of Ocean Action.

IUCN FACILITATES LEARNING IN THE PACIFIC FROM ASIA EXPERIENCES ON THE LARGE SCALE MANGROVE PROTECTION AND RESTORATION

The workshop was hosted by the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN), as part of its 70th anniversary celebrations in 2018. Participants discussed opportunities for moving beyond pilot initiatives and doing mangrove conservation as well as restoration at larger scales. Governments of Fiji, Kiribati, Solomon Islands, Tonga and Vanuatu and IUCN exchanged knowledge and experiences with MFF, including country experiences from India and Pakistan. |

The High-Level Panel presents a unique opportunity to solidify the connections between decision-makers who focus on marine and freshwater issues, and heighten knowledge about, and commitment to, the linkages between SDGs 6 and 14. GOVERNMENT OF ABU DHABI ANNOUNCED AS HOST OF WORLD OCEAN SUMMIT 2019

Abu Dhabi has been announced as the host of the World Ocean Summit 2019. A key priority for World Ocean Summit 2019 will be to foster greater cooperation and collaboration between different groups, and to serve as a bridge between the development of economic policies and protecting the marine environment.

PADDLING FOR A CLEANER OCEAN

Two anti-plastic activists are set to kayak almost 2,000km from Alaska to Canada to raise awareness on the devastating impacts of waste on the environment, fundraise for those fighting for ocean protection, conservation and inspire others. The trip will take 3 months in total and they hope to do it in kayaks made from recycled plastic.

UNECE ESTABLISHES TEAM OF SPECIALISTS ON SUSTAINABLE FISHERIES

The United Nations Economic Commission for Europe (UNECE), has established a Team of Specialists whose aim is to promote, facilitate and support the implementation of sustainable fisheries standards on a global scale. The Team held its first formal meeting, in Geneva; it was attended by 80 delegates representing national government agencies, international organizations, non-governmental organizations, and the private sector. |
