Nutrition and Soils in the 2030 Agenda: a contribution to the HLPF Thematic Reviews
Monday, 10 July 2017
1:15 PM - 2:45 PM
German Mission to the UN, 871 United Nations Plaza, New York, NY 10017

Side Event

This event will encourage discussions on how preparatory events in support of the High Level Political Forum (HLPF) can contribute to an integrated and coherent approach to SDG implementation. It will ask the questions: How can such preparatory events help deal with the complexity of implementing a universal 2030 Agenda? How can they support Member States in their implementation of the SDGs and the HLPF Thematic Reviews? The event will present two concrete examples for this and draw on such a preparatory event conducted in Berlin in May 2017 ahead of the HLPF 2017 with a land and soil lens. This exercise (Global Soil Week) produced 1) a set of policy messages on sustainable soil management and responsible land governance and 2) a report reflecting on the methodology utilized. Both these outcomes will be presented and discussed at the event. Moreover, we will aim to draw lessons from the Global Soil Week to conduct a similar exercise on the topic of nutrition ahead of the HLPF 2018/19. Focusing on nutrition for the upcoming HLPFs could help link issues related to healthy diets and sustainability, the use of natural resources and sustainable consumption and production. The discussions at this Side Event will be relevant for all SDGs being reviewed in depth in 2017 and especially for SDG 2 on ending hunger, achieving food security and improved nutrition and promoting sustainable agriculture.
