Special event

13 to 16 July 2020

The Global Technical Meeting (GTM2020) on ‘Reimagining Volunteering for the 2030 Agenda,’ will advance the debate on volunteering for the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). The virtual event will help shape the future of volunteering as a powerful resource for the Decade of Action.

The GTM2020 takes place at a critical juncture. Five years following the adoption of the 2030 Agenda, widespread social and economic transformation is still needed. Climate change and inequality threaten our systems to their foundation. There is a need to ensure that gains made to date are not reversed or stalled by the current COVID-19 pandemic. Worldwide, one billion volunteers are a formidable force for the 2030 Agenda. The collective power of volunteering to tackle complex challenges is evident more than ever in the response to COVID-19. And yet the role of volunteering in achieving the 2030 Agenda and the SDGs is not always fully supported to achieve its maximum potential.

In ‘Reimagining Volunteering for the 2030 Agenda,’ the GTM2020 will explore the following questions: Why does volunteering need to be reimagined for the 2030 Agenda? What contributions is volunteering making to the SDGs? What are the dimensions of volunteering that can transform and accelerate progress in the Decade of Action? What more needs to be done to strengthen policy coherence between volunteering and the SDGs? What are some of the measurement options for understanding the contributions of volunteer work to national priorities? What does the next generation of volunteering look like in a post-pandemic future and what innovative policy and practices are needed to support it? Debating and reviewing evidence to answer these questions will result in a global call to action to be presented at the closing of the meeting and will help enhance a knowledge base on volunteering in the context of the 2030 Agenda and the SDGs.

The target audience includes governments, UN entities, civil society, including academia, volunteer groups, research and policy actors, the private sector and general SDG stakeholders. Please register your participation at volunteerSDGs.org by Monday 13 July 2020 at 12.00 a.m. EDT. You will also find a regularly updated agenda on the same website. Online access details will be shared with registered participants via email shortly before the meeting.
