Lessons learned from SIDS: Ensuring a successful SDG Journey in a challenging vulnerability context
Tuesday, 13 July 2021
1:00 PM - 2:30 PM
Virtual (NY Time)

Side Event

The Governments of Cabo Verde, Antigua and Barbuda, Bahamas, Cuba, Dominican Republic, Marshall Islands have joined forces for this HLPF side-event, titled: "Lessons learned from SIDS: Ensuring a successful SDG Journey in a challenging vulnerability context ". The speakers will be the High-level officials of SIDS Governments submitting VNR this year, AOSIS, and the UN. The event is supported by Resident Coordinator Offices and the UN Department of Economic and Social Affairs. The goal of that event is to present SIDS’s common 2021 VNRs-reported challenges and specific successful experience in overcoming SIDS unique vulnerability to achieve substantive progress on one or more SDG while Leaving No One Behind.

In 2021, the SIDS countries submitting their VNR came together, in the elaboration process, to include a joint section in their respective national reports on SIDS common vulnerabilities and development challenges. This is the first time that there is a common section in SIDS VNRs. This approach is fully in line with the internationally agreed Declaration of the Small Island Developing States Accelerated Modalities of Action, the SAMOA Pathway, which acknowledges that SIDS remain a special case for sustainable development in view of their shared unique and particular vulnerabilities.
