Virtual (NY Time)

Side Event

The German Federal Ministry for the Environment (BMU) with the cooperation of the German Federal Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development (BMZ)

In 2016 - one year after the adoption of the 2030 Agenda - Germany presented its first VNR. Now, five years later, Germany presents its second VNR, showcasing lessons learned, SDG progress and key areas of transformation. Based on the revised German Sustainability Strategy, the second VNR shines a light on the efforts to meet the SDGs in Germany, globally and with partner countries. In particular, the side event aims to illustrate how a green and better recovery from the COVID-10 pandemic can act as a catalyst for a sustainable transformation.

The side event will examine how Germany’s sustainability policy is contributing to the Decade of Action and Delivery for the SDGs. It will include a first-hand presentation of the VNR by the German Parliamentary State Secretaries of the Federal Ministry for the Environment, Nature Conservation and Nuclear Safety as well as Federal Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development. The event seeks active interaction with representatives of main non-governmental stakeholders in Germany (business, trade union, NGOs, youth and think-tanks) to share their perspectives as well as with international high-level speakers, including from the global South, to comment on and complement the German experience. Overall, the side event seeks to provide an interactive platform on SDG implementation, with a strong focus on those targets of the 2030 Agenda, in which progress is currently too slow.
