Saami Council co-organized with Indigenous Peoples' Major Group
The Sámi and Inuit are the Indigenous Peoples in the Nordic region.
Denmark, Norway, and Sweden are submitting VNRs for the HLPF session in 2021. This side event in itself will demonstrate how Indigenous Peoples and states could work together to report on the progress to achieve the SDGs.
Thematically, the side event will discuss what challenges the Sámi and Inuit are facing related to the 2030 agenda and building an inclusive and effective path for the achievement of the 2030 Agenda in the context of the decade of action and delivery for sustainable development. A specific focus will be on Nordic national border issues arising from the lockdown preventing COVID-19 spreading and impacts on the indigenous cultures. What did we learn about borders during the pandemic?
The side event will invite Sámi Parliaments, Greenland Self Government authorities, Norway, Denmark, Sweden as well as Saami Council and Inuit Circumpolar Council representatives to a panel discussion on the above-described topics.
