Given the importance of the broad engagement of various stakeholders to the success of the SDGs, the event will showcase how citizens can contribute towards the implementation, tracking and review of progress on the global goals. The examples will cover a number of successful stories from the projects of the European Commission’s Science with and for Society (SwafS) programme, including Crowd4SDG that aims to create space for citizens to innovate and bring creative solutions for monitoring and achievement of SDGs.

The session will highlight two types of citizens’ contributions: 1) citizen science data and how it can be leveraged by National Statistical Offices (NSOs) for monitoring progress on the SDGs, and 2) specific solutions to addressing social, economic and environmental challenges. The first category will demo examples of how citizen science can contribute to data generation related to climate and gender and COVID-19 response, as well as the presentation of a Crowd4SDG report with recommendations developed with and for NSOs. The second category will introduce the Crowd4SDG GEAR Cycle used by partners to run a citizen teams’ competition and coach winning teams to enable them design innovative projects on SDG 13 and selected interlinkages with other Goals for each year (SDG 5, 11, 16). It will also feature successful case studies.

The event will be equally an opportunity to hear from citizens, government officials and all stakeholders on their needs and challenges related to GEAR Cycle 2 on SDG 13 and 5 that will be launched later this year.
