Information on activities at the national or international levels
Our inaugural program is to contextualize locally available cancer care resources in Africa by providing freely accessible, accurate and unbiased inventory of the current physician supply (oncologists and pathologists) and infrastructure for cancer care and control within the region. The database will also include a list of the local medical training institutions, palliative and hospice centers, and estimated cost for screening, diagnosis, treatment and palliative care for the cancer diseases prevalent locally within the 54 African states.
The overall goals of this activity are as follows:
▪Cancer Africa will be the primary source for information pertaining to the human and infrastructure capacity and planning for cancer care and control in the African continent.
▪Provide accurate information to the medical community, cancer patients, specialists associations, policy makers and the general public on the trends and dynamics of the regional cancer treatment and control framework so as to better inform their decision making .
▪The inventory will be utilized as a currency for accountability by the general public to hold their governments and donors accountable for the use of resources within their communities and ensure cancer care development and funding efforts are producing the desired results.
▪Lastly this inventory informs and enhances clinical practice and career development issues facing cancer care health care professionals such as oncologists, pathologists, palliative care specialists and oncology nurses.

One of the most significant barriers to adequately treating cancer patients in resource-limited locations is a lack of health care workers trained in oncology. Thus the need of fostering collaborations between oncology centers in developed nations and those in resource limited communities in Africa. Cancer Africa facilitated the introduction of Dr. Elizabeth Bigger an adult hematology oncologist with a keen interest in tumour immunology and lymphomas based at Princess Marina Hospital in Gaborone, Botswana with Dr. Richard Furman the Director for Chronic Lymphocytic Leukemia (CLL) Center at the Weill Cornell Medical Center NewYork Presbyterian Hospital. They are currently in discussion to collaborate to conduct research that seeks to understand the genetic predisposition to CLL and the incidence and survival for Africans with CLL. We have also reached out and continue to do so at leading academic cancer centers in New York to host oncologists working in the African continent to present grand rounds with the intention this could lead to further clinical and research collaborations with the host institutions.

In 2014, Cancer Africa, launched its speaker series event and successfully held the discussion panel event on ?Cost of Cancer Drugs-Financial Toxicity in Cancer Care?. The event speakers comprised of senior and renowned physicians and reputable leaders in health care. The inaugural event ?Cost of Cancer Drugs-Financial Toxicity in Cancer Care? was well received and published on the front page on one of the most widely distributed hematology and oncology publication ?The Oncology Times? sent out to 41000 oncology professionals globally. The organization also participated in the design and preparation of the discussion panel on ?A Deadly Divide: A Discussion of the Global Disparities in Women?s Cancers? at the Memorial Sloane Kettering Cancer Center in New York. In 2015 we will be presenting a seminar on surgical oncology capacity in Africa at Africa Organization on Cancer Research and Training at the bi annual meeting in Morocco in November 2015. We will also be presenting a talk the cancer narrative and story telling in Africa and the launching of the 2 year cancer patient advocacy program in Kenya and Botswana for 2016-2017.
