International Association of Independent Journalists Inc.
Information on the purpose of your organization

The International Association of Independent Journalists Inc. is an organization primarily created to fill the needs of the citizen journalists who find it hard to report on newsworthy events in their respective communities. So what we have here is primarily a venue; where anybody can join up, submit news stories, and be validated as a citizen journalist. We believe that is a fundamental right of any citizen, in any community, to become a journalist; and we will support that with our liberal policies of verifying journalists through our website and published newspaper and other forms of media such as television documentaries as well as international advocacy for the issues important to citizen journalists.. It is also a support group, and we will try to help each other out; to become better journalists, and to support the democratic right to tell the news to our fellow citizens, as we see it.

Our work on the post-2015 development agenda started at our inception in 2003, incorporating in 2008 as a new form of public access NGO. IAIJ is one of the oldest and largest associations for primarily internet based citizen journalism existing as a support group and as one of the few grass-roots citizen journalism advocacy groups operating internationally as their world-wide voice. IAIJ became an ?institutional member? of the Canadian Commission for UNESCO (CCU) in 2011. At our first participation at the CCU?s Annual General Meeting (2012), we were forwarded to UNESCO Headquarters (France) who wanted us to participate at their upcoming WSIS+10 Review Meeting (2013) of which one session would be devoted to citizen journalism. As information acquisition and dissemination and protections for journalists is an important part of the ?information society? IAIJ has lobbied on their behalf at the WSIS+10 Review Meeting (with our recommendation for protections for on-line journalists making it into the final statement). IAIJ also made a speech concerning internet access and journalist protections at the UN General Assembly Informal Interactive Consultations on WSIS+10 (July 2, 2015 - New York, United Nations Headquarters). Our primary on-going contribution to the post 2015 development agenda is to continue forging this new partnership as an example of permanent on-going stakeholder participation at high level events bringing the needs and concerns of the citizen journalist (general public) to the issues important to them at institutions like the UN.
Information on activities at the national or international levels
Started the "Citizen Journalist Initiative" in 2009 to lobby for citizen journalist rights and freedoms on the international level. Lobbied on behalf of citizen journalism at the 52nd and 53rd Annual General Meetings at the Canadian Commission for UNESCO (we are "Institutional Members" there since 2011). Submitted a survey and report on citizen journalism at the request of UNESCO Headquarters in Paris, France (December 2012). That same report got the association an invite to the WSIS+10 Review Meetings held in Paris, France (February 25-27, 2013) to participate as one of the speakers in a session about citizen journalism. IAIJ made a speech concerning internet access and journalist protections at the UN General Assembly Informal Interactive Consultations on WSIS+10 (July 2, 2015). Continued expansion of our organization into many more countries with office access and support. Continued progress with our goals in our 'Citizen Journalist Initiative" started in 2009 to educate lobby and advocate citizen journalist issues to the world and support for our membership inside our organization.
