International Institute for Sustainability Analysis and Strategy
Information on the purpose of your organization

The International Institute for Sustainability Analysis and Strategy (IINAS) is an independent transdisciplinary research organization based in Darmstadt (Germany) which started operating in April 2012.
INAS is a small think tank being part of an extensive international network of scientists within IINAS, in partner institutes and associated independent consultants, providing together integrated research, analyses and consultancy services in the sustainability domain.
The approach of IINAS is characterized by its emphasis on networking and transdisciplinary work. Transdisciplinarity goes beyond interdisciplinary collaboration among scientists by including key stakeholders in all work phases ? from defining the scope to implementing results. In our research we partner with decision-makers in private and public sectors as well as stakeholders. The latter include NGO such as IUCN and WWF.
Key clients and donors of IINAS are national government agencies in Germany and other European countries, the EU Commission, the European Parliament, and international institutions (e.g., FAO, GEF, IEA, UNEP). IINAS also works with associations, foundations and the private sector, seeking diversity of sources as the base of its independence.
Information on your programmes and activities in areas relevant to the subject of the Summit and in which country or counties they are carried out.
IINAS uses quantitative methods and modeling, though applying qualitative analysis when appropriate (e.g. for social issues). Applicability and implementation of results are key to success, as IINAS is oriented towards transdisciplinarity.
IINAS focuses on integrated analysis, participatory modeling and strategy development for key sustainability issues such as biodiversity, climate change, employment, land use, and resource efficiency.
With regard to energy, resource efficiency and material flows, IINAS addresses both supply and demand side issues, e.g. sustainable consumption. Our analysis addresses key quantitative environmental indicators such as greenhouse gas and air emissions, resource use (land, raw materials, primary energy, water), wastes as well as costs and employment effects.
Our strategy development is based on holistic modeling and interaction with stakeholders. IINAS has a focus on European and international activities, but also works on national and local levels.
Recent key activities are:
Global sustainable land use (see http://www.iinas.org/globalands.html)
Sustainable biomass use (see http://www.iinas.org/biomass-en.html)
IINAS also provides data and methods for sustainable consumption and production (see http://www.iinas.org/gemis.html)
