The mission of the University of Michigan is to serve the people of Michigan and the world through preeminence in creating, communicating, preserving and applying knowledge, art and academic values, and in developing leaders and citizens who will challenge the present and enrich the future http://accreditation.umich.edu/mission/
The school values sustainability and international development. Several sectors of the organization are directly involved with sustainable development.
The School of Natural Resources and Environment's overarching objective is to contribute to the protection of the Earth's resources and the achievement of a sustainable society. Through research, teaching and outreach, faculty, staff and students are devoted to generating knowledge and developing policies, techniques and skills to help practitioners manage and conserve natural and environmental resources to meet the full range of human needs on a sustainable basis.
Center for Sustainable Systems advances concepts of sustainability through interdisciplinary research and education. CSS collaborates with diverse stakeholders to develop and apply life cycle based models and sustainability metrics for systems that meet societal needs. CSS promotes tools and knowledge that support the design, evaluation, and improvement of complex systems.

The activities of the university in areas of sustainability are numerous. In particular the School of Natural resources has more than 12 teams working around the world in development contexts and integrating sustainability. For example, students are working with local governments in India to use the desilting of ponds as a sustainable option for fertilizing reaching thousands of farmers; faculty and students are working with local communities in Peru to use aquaponics as an adaptive mechanism to times of drought and lack of irrigation options, and another group is designing biosand filters for the treatment of water in rural areas of China.
Information on activities at the national or international levels
The University is involved in more than 600 sites around the world. The work includes all areas of natural, social, medical, and engineering sciences. Sustainability is a big area of research, education, and teaching in all those areas.

The University is led by Regents chosen to office by public vote in the state of Michigan, and the president, Dr. Mark Schlissel, appointed by the regents. An organizational chart of other leaders can be sent upon request and has been submitted as part of our application for ECOSOC status.
