[Policy recommendations and research activities to change the society]

Amid the discussions on development challenges from 2015 onwards (i.e. post-MDGs discussion) at various levels regarding the MDGs whose target year is set to 2015, JANIC boosted post-MDGs discussion in Japan by participating in the 5th Tokyo International Conference on African Development (TICAD V) and in UN General Assembly's Special Event towards achieving the MDGs and hosting seminars and symposiums aimed for NGOs in Japan. Also, we made a booklet and guide and held seminars to facilitate the understanding and practice of Istanbul Principles to improve the development effect of NGOs.
Information on activities at the national or international levels
We serve as Secretariat or became a member of NGO-Ministry of Foreign Affairs Regular Consultation Meeting and NGO-JICA Consultation Meeting, which have been set up as forums for the government and NGOs to discuss such global challenges and Japan?s ODAs and contributed to liven up the discussion. Especially in ?Taskforce for medium-term planning on the collaboration between NGOs and ODAs? set up under the Ministry of Foreign Affairs Regular Consultation Meeting?, we engage in discussions with the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and other NGOs regarding the collaboration expanded to the broad areas covering from policy decision process to the exchange of human resources.

In order to make the achievements of recommendations incorporated to the actual policy, it is necessary to work on the policy makers such as Diet members along with gaining understanding of the people. Together with other organizations, we held a study session with the Diet members for the first time in 2013 to convey NGO?s opinions to Diet members.

As to the overseas networking, we attended the meetings such as CSO Partnership for Development Effectiveness (CPDE) to reinforce the network with NGOs in north-east Asia. Meanwhile, we strengthened the collaboration with regional network NGOs by hosting seminars related to post-MDGs and supporting their participation in international conferences and contributed to set up new networks related to disaster prevention and Act on the Protection of Specially Designated Secrets for domestic networking.
