1. Beginning of Africa Japan Forum

Africa Japan Forum (AJF) was established in 1994, following the first Tokyo International Conference on African Development to create a partnership with people of Africa based on the mutual agenda/purpose to alleviate the political, economic and social challenges as well as environmental degradation of Africa through support and cooperation.

2. Objective

(1)To establish equal partnerships with the people of Africa(2)To organize networks of those involved in Africa-related activities
(3)To promote activities related to Africa and to raise awareness of Africa
(4)To review the politics, economy, and lifestyles of Japan and the world that has significant impact on the people of Africa and find ways to improve conditions

3. Activities

To achieve these objectives, AJF carries out the following activities:

(1) Provide resource, information, publicity, counseling and other means of support for people and organizations who seek to work in the alleviation of challenges and difficulties in Africa
(2) Increase network and cooperation among NGOs in Africa or involved in Africa related issues, international organization and the government
(3) Through information gathering and dissemination and participation in national and international meetings, works to create, advocate and campaign for policies for a sustainable Africa. Furthermore, AJF works to coordinate Japanese civil society organizations in addressing issues and policies related to Africa
(4) Increasing knowledge/understanding of Africa through holding of seminars, providing publications, and using web sites
(5) Holding events for the general community to increase understanding of cultures and issues of Africa and with African communities to discuss issues related to their experience in Japan or country of origin

3. Details

(1) Advocacy on Post-2015 Agenda

Africa Japan Forum (AJF: "Afrika Nihon Kyougikai" in Japanese name) has been leading national civil society advocacy in Japan. AJF has been serving the secretariat of GCAP Japan ("Ugoku-Ugokasu" in Japanese name), which is the leading Japanese civil society network for advocacy and public mobilization for MDGs and Post-2015 Agenda. Currently, AJF is the secretariat of action/2015 Japan.

As the secretariat of GCAP Japan, AJF has been working for organizing the regular dialogue between Japanese civil society working on international development and environment and Japanese government (GoJ) on Post-2015, since 2012. With the attendance of chief negotiator of Japanese government, CSO-GoJ dialogues have been held more than 20 times and meaning ful discussions were provided on various issues related to Post-2015.

AJF also encouraged multi-sectoral discussions including public and private sector, as well as academics/researchers and mass-media. It also organized a series of public meetings in various regions in Japan, including Sapporo, Nagoya, Osaka, Fukuoka, Kochi and Tokushima with their local groups on Post-2015. Students, workers, farmers, fisher folks, and various social sectors in local communities participated in these meetings. Reports of these meetings were submitted to Beyond 2015.

(2) Representation of Japanese Civil Society in the Summit

GCAP Japan, whose secretariat is served by Africa Japan Forum, is the leading network of Japanese civil society working on Post-2015. It has been representing Japanese civil society for global civil society networks, including Beyond 2015 and action/2015.

It has been sending Japanese civil society representatives in MDGs and Post-2015 related sessions in the UN, including UN General Assembly in each year after 2012, and International Conference on Financing for Development (FFD3) in Addis Ababa this year.

It is necessary for Japanese civil society to keep representation of ourselves in the Summit and deliver the voices of Japanese civil society there, as the national network of Beyond 2015, action/2015, etc.

(3) Global Health

Africa Japan Forum has been working on global health policy, including HIV/AIDS, TB and Malaria, as well as universal health coverage. It is actually related to the Goal 3 of Sustainable Development Goals.
Information on activities at the national or international levels
1. National Level

Africa Japan Forum (AJF) is the secretariat of Ugoku/Ugokasu (GCAP Japan), which has more than 78 membership organizations working on international development. It facilitates the official regular dialogue between Japanese CSOs and Government of Japan on Post-2015. Mr. Masaki Inaba, Director of Global Health, Africa Japan Forum, has been serving the Executive Director of Ugoku/Ugokasu.

Mr. Inaba also serves the President of Japanese CSO Network on Global Health, which is the coordination mechanism of Japanese NGOs working on global health with 38 health-related CSOs.

2. International and Regional Level

Ugoku/Ugokasu, whose secretariat is served by AJF, is the Japanese national network of Beyond 2015. It is also the Japanese national network of action/2015, the global campaign body for Post-2015.

Ugoku/Ugokasu is one of the members of UNESCAP Regional Civil Society Organizations Engagement Mechanism (UN=RCEM), working especialily in the constituency groups of HIV/AIDS and Migrants issues.

AJF has been working with several African NGOs/CSOs on African health issues, especially HIV/AIDS.
