Information on the purpose of your organization

The objective of the Commonwealth Medical Trust (Commat) is the:

To increase the effectiveness of health professionals and their associations, especially in Commonwealth developing countries in the promotion of health, the prevention of disease and disability and the advancement of human rights and medical ethics, particularly for the poor, vulnerable and marginalized groups in developing countries.

Its programme of work takes full account of the paramount need to work for the achievement of Millennium Development Goals (MDGs), particularly MDG 5 on maternal health and universal access to sexual and reproductive health, and to promote the post-2015 development agenda, focusing on:

? promoting a rights-based approach to sexual and reproductive health;
? ensuring the resourcing of sexual and reproductive health;
? promoting linking and integration of sexual and reproductive health services with other health services;
? promoting and monitoring the right to health including medical ethics and human rights standards for health professionals;
? integrating reproductive health into the curriculum for undergraduate, post-graduate and continuing health professional education
? Collaborating with other organizations to work for the inclusion of sexual and reproductive health and rights in the post-2015 development agenda, including the sustainable development goals and targets.

Commat takes full account of the importance of a gender-based approach and the needs of adolescents, when planning and carrying out its programme of work.

Information on your programmes and activities in areas relevant to the subject of the Summit and in which country or counties they are carried out.
The activities of the Commonwealth Medical Trust over the past three years have focused primarily on contributing to and promoting the development of the post-2015 development agenda. Its Director has attended all the sessions of the intergovernmental negotiation and nearly all those of the Open Working Group. Commat runs the www.NGOsBeyond2014.org website, on which it has posted more than 550 articles on various aspects of the process since 2011. It also links to Facebook and Twitter. The website reaches civil society and other actors in over 180 countries.

The Commat Director has made presentations at most of the interactive sessions with civil society as well as speaking at various meetings and contributing articles on the post-2015 development agenda and related processes to relevant periodicals. In addition Commat has provided back-stopping and advocacy information various networks such as the SRHR Platform for Post-2015; the EuroNGOs, a network of European-based NGOs that works on sexual and reproductive health and rights; and the UK Sexual and Reproductive Health Network (which comprises both international and national NGOs).

While Commat is based the United Kingdom, it collaborates and works with civil society organisations in countries in Africa, such as Uganda, in Pakistan and in various countries in Europe. It also works with a wide range of regional network.
Information on activities at the national or international levels
At national level the Commonwealth Medical Trust works to provide information for and liaise with the UK Government, parliamentarians and civil society organisations and networks working on sexual and reproductive health and the post-2015 development agenda.
At the regional levels Commat works with the EuroNGOs (see above); CONCORD and civil society organisations working in the Netherlands (RutgersWPF); Germany (DSW) and in other countries as required.
At the international level, Commat is a member of, and spokesperson for the Health in Post-2015 NGO Coalition. It also collaborates closely with UNFPA and relevant sectors of the World Health Organization. It has also provided information to and worked with the Co-facilitators for the intergovernmental negotiations and DESA DSD
