Horn of Africa Regional Environment Center and Network
Information on the purpose of your organization

The vision of the Horn of Africa Regional Environment Centre and Network is to contribute to: Sustainable development, Environmental conservation and Prevention of conflict escalation around access to natural resources in the Horn of Africa. The Mission of the Centre and Network is to improve environmental governance and management in the Horn of Africa Region, encompassing Ethiopia, Sudan, Djibouti, Kenya, Somalia and Eritrea.

HoA-REC/N ultimately, the Centre and Network aim to improve environmental governance and management by focusing on:

Promoting and advocating environmental knowledge, awareness and behavioral change
Influencing the adjustment of environmental policies and legislation based on enhanced and enlarged dialogues on environmental issues
Building institutional and human capacity in the environmental sphere
Stimulating and facilitating selected environmental programmes of CBOs, NGOs, research institutions and academia.
Information on your programmes and activities in areas relevant to the subject of the Summit and in which country or counties they are carried out.
The mission and vision of HoA-REC&N are realized through its partnership programmes. The Climate Resilience Partnership Programme implements projects focusing on climate change adaptation and mitigation, sustainable energy including Clean Development Mechanisms (CDM) and voluntary pro-poor carbon projects. The Social Ecological Resilience Partnership Programme deals with ecosystem conservation and management and rehabilitation of degraded ecosystems. The Environmental Governance and Education Partnership Programme aspires to improve environmental governance at global, regional, national and local levels, mainstream environment and sustainability in education systems, and facilitate demand driven action research.

The programmatic and project activities are carried out in the Horn of Africa region including Ethiopia, Kenya, Djibouti, Sudan, SouthSudan, and Somalia. All the activities are in one way or other contribute towards achieving the Post 2015 goals and targets and also contributes towards the knowledge related to the indicators of the goals.
Information on activities at the national or international levels
The Centre/Network as indicated in section 2 carries out number of activities within the countries in the Horn of Africa region. At the international level it is involved in supporting the climate negotiations by building capacities in the region. It also works on number of projects with international partners from all over the world including the recent one related to the project 'Coasts and Communities'. Furthermore, the Centre/Network had been activities involved in the Post 2015 discussions by organizing number of meetings in the region as well as by attending and working with NGOs to influence the agenda at the international level.

The regional network council comprises of twelve members - two each from each country elected during the annual general assembly of the Network. The regional council is represented in the board by the Chairman Dr.Shaddad
