Information on the purpose of your organization

A leading European research-intensive university, UCD is the largest university in Ireland, and is one of the two Irish universities ranked within the top 200 universities in the world (THE World University Ranking).
It is ranked 45 in the World in Development Studies by the QS World University Rankings by Subject. UCD has a long history with education, research, and exchange with East African Universities. This goes back to UCD training the Catholic Priests that went on mission, Irish Aid fellowship program for civil servants in East Africa and the more recent UCD Horizons Program, UCD Volunteers Overseas, Masters in Development Practice Program, the Ph.D. in Global Human Development and the Research Centres in Humanitarian Action and Sustainable Development Solutions.
With a history stretching back to 1854 and an impressive list of notable alumni, including the writer James Joyce and many current and former government ministers, we can rightly claim to have been a formative influence and an integral part of the Irish State since its foundation. In recent years UCD has established itself as Ireland?s Global University, with operations around the world, and more than 5000 international students attending our Dublin campus coming from 124 different countries. We aim to give all students an international education that will prepare them to take their place in today and tomorrow?s global society.

UCD offers many undergraduate electives on International Development across Business, Law, Social Science, Medicine, Agriculture and Engineering. This includes a new undergraduate elective, or horizon course, called achieving the Sustainable Development Goals. The goal is ensure that all UCD undergraduate students do a least one course/module on global challenges during their undergraduate years.
UCD Volunteers Overseas was established in 2003 by the former UCD Chaplain Fr Tony Coote in response to an expressed desire among students to engage in voluntary work abroad. Since its inception and launch as a registered charitable organisation in 2004, UCDVO has extended its activities to projects in India, Haiti, Nicaragua,Tanzania and Uganda and employs two full-time staff to co-ordinate its activities. To date, 1157 volunteers have engaged in environmental, educational, healthcare, construction and computer training projects in disadvantaged communities overseas
UCD offers many Masters Courses in the area of International Development including the Masters in Development Practice. Since 2007 UCD has hosted a local Dublin Masters in Development Practice (MDP) while chairing the Global Association of MDPs based in Columbia University, New York. The MDP is a two-year programme that offers professional training in Sustainable Development Practice at the graduate level. The Global MDP was funded with start-up money by the MacArthur Foundation (U.S.A.) to the value of $22m. The MDP provides interdisciplinary professional training that addresses the challenges of sustainable development across four academic pillars: Health, Social and Natural Sciences and Management, and across two development practice engagements, including fieldwork within country and internships with international organisations. The Global Association is now composed of 40 top Universities hosted in all continents of the world. It currently has over 5,000 students and alumni. Professor Jeffery Sachs Columbia University is the President of the association while Professor Patrick Paul Walsh of UCD chairs the Academic Steering Committee, www.globalmdp.org.
Coordinating and supervising students out in the field has given UCD staff remarkably good within country experience. The MDP has given staff unique insights into how one goes about research and education across the three pillars of Sustainable Development mixing Science with Social Science, Theory with Practice and Transferring knowledge South North and vice versa.

Finally Many students do Ph.D. in Development issues within their School prorgams such as economics. UCD also runs a flagship Ph.D. in Global Human (Sustainable) Development. The latter trains Public Servants, including academics in Universities, up to Ph.D. level in East Africa and beyond. This includes staff in statistics offices, planning and research think- thanks. We have successfully graduated 50 students since 2007. Building capacity in sustainable development practice within government is the key to success over the next fifteen years. Working with Ph.Ds, UCD works closely with government officials from the Developing world.

Finally UCD has two Research Centres, The Centre for Humanitarian Action http://cha.ucd.ie/, which hosted the 2015 World Humanitarian Summit, and the UCD Centre for Sustainable Development Solutions, that is a member of the www.unsdsn.org.
