The WOC brings together industries that use the ocean to catalyze global leadership and collaboration in addressing cross-cutting issues in support of responsible business, reduced risk and sustainable development.
The WOC is creating multi-industry working groups to tackle cross-cutting priorities for ocean sustainable development, e.g. ocean governance/policy, marine spatial planning, marine sound, pollution, the Arctic, marine invasive species, marine debris, marine mammal impacts, port reception facilities, the adaptation of ports and coastal infrastructure to sea level rise/extreme weather events and data collection by ocean industries (ships/platforms of opportunity).

The WOC has become the recognized global portal and platform for the ocean business community to engage with the UN, with governments and with other ocean stakeholders.
Information on activities at the national or international levels
Since its formal start in 2009, the World Ocean Council (WOC) has created the only international, multi-industry leadership alliance for ?Corporate Ocean Responsibility?. A growing number and wide range of more than 70 ocean leadership companies and partners are now collaborating on ocean sustainability, science and stewardship.

The WOC has established the only international, cross-sectoral ocean industry conference on sustainability ? the ?Sustainable Ocean Summit? (SOS). This highly successful event was convened in 2010 (Belfast) and 2013 (Washington DC), and will now take place every 2 years, with the next SOS 2015 to be held in Singapore. As part of SOS 2013, the WOC has started the ?Oceans 2050? process to catalyze ocean sectors working together on common vision for sustainable, safe, responsible and economically viable ocean business.

The unprecedented WOC creation of an international ?ocean business community? goes beyond the WOC Members and includes over 34,000 ocean industry stakeholders. The WOC is frequently invited to be a keynote speaker at major ocean industry conferences.

Some recent activities of this include, the WOC:

? Convened the only gathering of ocean industries to provide ocean business community input to Rio+20.
