Letter from FAO Chief Economist to President of ECOSOC

Excellency,

I have the honour to refer to your communications to the Chairs of a number of the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO) Technical Committees and Governing Bodies established under the Constitution of the FAO seeking inputs to the High-level Political Forum on Sustainable Development 2021 (HLPF) with the theme: “Sustainable and resilient recovery from the COVID-19 pandemic that promotes the economic, social and environmental dimensions of sustainable development: building an inclusive and effective path for the achievement of the 2030 Agenda in the context of the decade of action and delivery for sustainable development”.

In particular, these bodies included: the FAO Council, FAO Technical Committees on Agriculture (COAG), Commodity Problems (CCP), Fisheries (COFI), and Forestry (COFO), as well as three Statutory Bodies of the Organization, including, the Commission on Genetic Resources for Food and Agriculture (CGRFA), the Governing Body of the Treaty on Plant Genetic Resources for Food and Agriculture (ITPGRFA), the International Plant Protection Convention (IPPC) and the Codex Alimentarius Commission, a joint body established by the FAO Conference and the Assembly of the World Health Organization (WHO).

The inputs are accompanied by a brief summary of the key messages emanating from the contributions of the bodies. I trust that this information will assist the HLPF 2021 and provide negotiators and delegates with evidence and insights to identify coordinated and effective measures to accelerate progress across SDGs.

I take this opportunity to assure you, Excellency, that the Organization and its Members are fully committed to support the important work of the HLPF 2021 towards mobilizing actions to accelerate the achievement of the Agenda 2030.
