Description/achievement of initiative

The ‘MAMA-LIGHT® initiative for Sustainable Energy’ is a worldwide program empowering the bottom of the pyramid by making MAMA-LIGHT® off grid solar systems available to people without access to modern energy. It is a proven and scalable model able to accelerate sustainable economic growth for youth and women. The initiative has been recognized by the Dutch Government as an inclusive Green Growth Business Model and is part of the approved voluntary commitments of the UN World Conference on Disaster Risk Reduction in Sendai 2015.

Implementation methodologies

The MAMA-LIGHT® Initiative is led by H.R.H. Princess Abze Djigma, who is committed to facilitate the training of 40.000 women and youth in West Africa together with local and regional authorities in order to accelerate the roll out of energy solutions and the reduction of poverty by 2020. Progress is assessed via the annual report of CCT/UEMOA to the Commission of UEMOA and to ECOSOC.
