Greentouch Consortium (2nd SE4All Forum Commitments)
Description/achievement of initiative

GreenTouch is a global research consortium dedicated to improving the energy efficiency of telecommunications network by a factor 1000x. With world-class researchers from 50+ leading organizations, GreenTouch has built a comprehensive research portfolio addressing the energy challenges in the communications network. Besides inventing new technologies, GreenTouch is committed to quantifying and validating the energy efficiency benefits and demonstrating the key enabling technologies.

Implementation methodologies

GreenTouch considers as feasible the reduction by 2020 of the net energy consumption in communication networks by up to 90%. This would be possible thanks to a dramatic improvements in energy efficiency in key networks. This result demonstrates the capacity to support predicted traffic growth in future networks, whilst significantly reducing the total energy consumption of the networks . These results are even more important as they represent significant opportunities to reduce global greenhouse gas emissions by up to 16% through their indirect enabling effect on other industrial sectors.
