Description/achievement of initiative
Within the period running from 1998 to 2012, the Chinese Government provided electricity access to more than 36 million people, living since that moment without modern energy service. Nevertheless, about 2.73 million people still remain uncovered. According to the 12th Five-year Plan (2011-2015) of the Chinese Government, the whole Chinese population will be able to access to electricity services by 2015. So far, the plan has been working smoothly and will be completed in time.
For the near future, China has formulated its commitment to increase its non-fossil energy consumption share to 15% and 20% respectively by 2020 and 2030 (from about 11% in 2014).
Implementation methodologies
By 2014, the installed capacity of renewable energy in China reached 440GW, taking 32% of the total installed capacity for electricity. Among them, the installed capacity of hydro, wind and solar power are 300GW, 96GW and 28GW respectively, all of which rank among the highest in the world.
