Description/achievement of initiative
The UN Economic Commission for Africa (ECA) champions structural transformation and inclusive green growth in Africa – an agenda that requires access to sustainable energy forms and services.
Implementation methodologies
The Commission's work in support to clean energy deployment in the continent includes promotion of (i) investments in energy efficiency, (ii) pro-poor public private partnerships in the delivery of renewable energy services, (iii) localisation of clean energy value chains, and (iv) support to the Presidential Infrastructure Champion Initiative, within the framework of the Programme for Infrastucture Development in Africa (PIDA).
In partnership with the AUC and NEPAD, the ECA developed the “African Bioenergy Framework and Policy Guidelines”, endorsed by Heads of State and Government in 2013. The Commission is now partnering with strategic partners, including IRENA, to support transformative and regional energy systems in the continent. The ECA is also promoting institutional strengthening, policy and regulatory frameworks as well as capacity development for energy planning.
