Description/achievement of initiative
SolarAid is an international charity that combats poverty and climate change. We are providing access to solar lights in some of the most remote regions of the world and building a movement to eradicate the kerosene lamp. To date. SolarAid’s social enterprise has sold 1.7 million solar lights, benefiting 10 million people.
Implementation methodologies
SolarAid commits to build the alliance to eradicate the kerosene lamps from Africa using four approaches:
* Social Enterprise: We will enter four more countries to catalyse the market, demonstrating that serving poorer customers and more remote communities can be sustainable.
* Innovation and Partnerships: We will find new routes to market and new ways to make lights affordable. We will help four partners replicate our model, and help 100 SMEs enter the market.
* Research & Policy: We will generate the evidence needed to promote distributed renewables in the energy mix. We will lobby four African governments to include ‘off-grid’ in national energy policies.
* Voice: We will ensure that the voices of those in energy poverty are heard at the highest levels and advocate to ensure no one is left behind in the drive for Sustainable Energy for All.
