PowerGen Renewable Energy (2nd SE4All Forum Commitments)
Description/achievement of initiative

PowerGen Renewable Energy commits to providing 800,000 beneficiaries with electricity by 2020. PowerGen will design, install, and operate 1100 solar micro-grids in East Africa in the next four years. The micro-grids will deliver on-demand, alternating current (AC) electricity to communities and towns that are currently unconnected to national grids. Smart metering technology allows customers to pre-pay for energy using mobile money and for remote operation of the grids from our headquarters in Nairobi. Each year these micro-grids will supply over 75 MWH of clean electricity, displaces 75 tons of carbon dioxide and save homes and businesses over 13 million dollars in fuel costs. These micro-grids will act as nodes for eventual grid extension and help further understanding of demand and consumption of rural communities, providing roadmaps for central grid densification.
