Strengthening women’s ability for productive new opportunities (SWAPNO)
Description/achievement of initiative

In Bangladesh, women are often employed at the lower end of the productivity scale. For example, labor force participation of rural women in Bangladesh is only 36.4% vs. 83.3% of men. Creating employment and income generating opportunities for women and enhancing women’s access to social protection will help reduce gender inequality and women’s poverty and vulnerability.

Implementation methodologies

This SDG Fund programme is led by UNDP, in partnership with ILO, local governments, and private partners. The goal is to assist women from ultra-poor and most vulnerable households to move out of poverty. The programme will be piloted in the Kurigram district in the north west and the coastal Satkhira district—the most affected by natural disasters and climate change. The programme aims to scale-up to 20 districts following implementation in the 2 pilot districts. The total budget of the programme corresponds to $4.6 million.
