MOZWILD – Protecting Wildlife and Biodiversity in Mozambique
Description/achievement of initiative

MOZWILD commitment is a comprehensive approach based on an innovative strategic plan to protect, restore and promote sustainable use of terrestrial ecosystems, sustainably manage forests, and halt and reverse land degradation and halt biodiversity loss, including addressing the present wildlife crisis by combating poaching and trafficking and promoting within valuable information new regulation and specific legislation in Mozambique on a national level.

Implementation methodologies

Setting a logical framework, its action plan builds on an umbrella initiative putting together twelve operational projects organised under four main programmes: Capacity Building, Strategic Operational Research and Development Projects, Network and Cooperation Platform, Visibility and Campaigning.

Identify and localize all relevant animal and plant species as possible, including microorganism, and evaluate their status concerning number, genetic pool, ecology and vulnerability, and create a dedicated data-base with specific and public access and visibility.

Identify, evaluate and report with valuable information all relevant biodiversity hotspots and critical ecosystems in Mozambique on a national level, including the present unsustainable use of its natural resources, and promote education and training within a comprehensive outreach programme mainstreaming biodiversity and the philosophy of sustainable development.

Create plant nurseries and promote and implement reforestation programmes, while creating jobs and promoting eco-friendly and sustainable use of its resources and components by a green-economy comprehensive approach and the equitable share of the benefits arising from the use of genetic resources among the local communities actively engaged in the process.

Responsibly inform and report authorities in order to help implementing more effective political and strategic programmes and supporting legislation concerning the creation of new protected areas, including national parks and reserves, trans-frontier conservation areas, forest reserves, hunting reserves, wildlife corridors, and urgently addressing the present wildlife crisis, including poaching and trafficking activities, and help managing the already protected areas in existence.
