Description/achievement of initiative
Let There Be Light International donates individual Solar Lights in sub-Saharan Africa to families living in extreme poverty and prioritizes distribution to handicapped and orphaned children, the elderly, new mothers, and widows living with HIV/AIDS. LTBLI also raises funds for the installation of solar lighting systems at un-electrified, off-grid Health Facilities. We partner with local NGOs to distribute safe solar lights to at-risk populations via existing social service delivery channels. Our mission is to raise awareness about Global Energy Poverty and to fundraise for the purchase and distribution of Solar Lights to off-grid populations in sub-Saharan Africa.
Implementation methodologies
Pre and post-electrification surveys are conducted of potential solar light recipients. Community-wide solar outreach and educational meetings are held and hosted in partnership with local leadership. All solar light recipients sign usage agreements, and follow-up support is provided by outreach workers. Existing social service delivery channels are utilized for the efficient identification of those in need of safe lighting interventions. Annual comprehensive impact surveys are/will be administered to inform programming and to measure indicators of impact.
Arrangements for Capacity-Building and Technology Transfer
LTBLI has trained 2 employees and 5 field officers of KACCAD to understand energy poverty and LTBLI's programs to address entrenched energy poverty. Training on google forms and sheets have been implemented, and the transfer of 4 tablet computers with tracking and evaluation programs pre-installed will be concluded in September 2016.
Coordination mechanisms/governance structure
The initiative is created, funded and governed by Let There Be Light International (LTBLI) and implemented by Kyosiga Christian Community Association for Development (KACCAD). The Executive Director of LTBLI and the Executive Director of KACCAD conduct monthly assessments of need and create plans of intervention. All receipts and reports are filed by LTBLI and KACCAD, and impacts are measured by the administration of surveys and questionnaires.
