Description/achievement of initiative
The Hosh Al-Syrian is a project that has for aim to restore and renovate the old city cultural heritage of Bethlehem by the Municipality with the aid of the PMSP project.
Since the end of renovations, the Hosh Al-Syrian is run as a guesthouse and restaurant that promote employment of staff trained on the premises and given a chance to develop their skills as well as attracting tourists to enjoy local produce from the farmer's market next door and staying in the renovated city core of Bethlehem.
Implementation methodologies
The building, after renovation, is leased and the management of the property as well as the social development engagement are carried out by the management of the Hosh Al-Syrian.
Chef & Owner, Fadi Kattan has developped a two sided approach. On one hand the team come from the vicinity and have no experience in the tourism industry. They are trained on the premises and given an opportunity to develop their skills as well as their cultural exchange with the international clientele. On the other hand, all products used are coming either from the farmers market next door or directly from small farms in the region.
Arrangements for Capacity-Building and Technology Transfer
Daily, training is happening at the Hosh Al-Syrian. Either classes given to the team or by hands-on work training.
Coordination mechanisms/governance structure
The Hosh Al-Syrian renovation was managed by the partnership between Bethlehem Municipality, the CCHP and the PMSP in joint partnership with Italian municipalities.
