Monitoring and Management of Persistent Organic Pollutants (POPs) in Asia
Description/achievement of initiative

UNU-IAS has initiatives geared towards strengthening of research and support for capacity building on POPs. The monitoring of PFCs in water have been conducted in nine Asian partner countries under the projects Phase VII (2016-2018). The project participants comprise a network of research institutions in the Asian region that promotes science-practice-policy linkages through multi-stakeholder partnerships involving various stakeholders The overall projects contribution is not only with respect to the Stockholm Convention on POPs, but also in the context of the implementation of the United Nations 2030 Sustainable Development Agenda and the Sustainable Development Goals.

Implementation methodologies

Arrangements for Capacity-Building and Technology Transfer

Shimadzu Corporation (Shimadzu) contributes to this project by providing laboratory equipment, liquid chromatography-tandem mass spectrometry (LC/MS/MS). In liaisoning with UNU-IAS, the Shimadzu organize technical training for chemical analysis using this equipment for the project participants. With this equipment and technical support, the participating countries will carry out PFC analysis in environment water, sediment and biota samples from rivers and coastal areas as well as drinking water in the Asia-Pacific region until the end of 2018. Regional knowledge sharing initiatives focusing on the experience of capacity development have been actively taken by the project members in 2016. Knowledge on analytical techniques have been transferred to various universities, research institutes and government organizations within the region. The monitoring data of this project have also been actively shared with various stakeholders including government ministries, and these actions were developed into multi-stakeholder partnership for mainstreaming the monitoring results into policy development for sound chemical management at national, regional and global levels. This has also contributed to the implementation of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).

Coordination mechanisms/governance structure

UNU-IAS has initiatives geared towards strengthening of research and support for capacity building on POPs that are regulated by the Stockholm Convention, particularly of developing countries in the Asian region for the purpose of establishing proper management of environmental contaminants based on scientific monitoring procedures, focusing on the hydrosphere. From its launching in 1996, the project has contributed to the establishment of capacity-building network that provides learning environment as well as the achievement of sound management of POPs regionally. The monitoring of nine PFCs in the environment - water, sediment, biota and drinking water - have been conducted in ten Asian partner countries - China, India, Indonesia, Republic of Korea, Malaysia, Pakistan, Philippines, Singapore, Thailand and Vietnam in 2017 under the projects Phase VII (2016-2018).
