Description/achievement of initiative
In partnership with the NGO Lynion , the project started a training cycle for refugees and migrants in 2016, providing them with tools that contribute to their insertion into the Brazilian labor market. Besides meeting a social demand to include and integrate different cultures, the initiative allows participants to exercise their skills and share knowledge, thus contributing to strengthen the local economy and generate income for participants.
Implementation methodologies
The program is divided into 5 modules of 8 hours, which address issues relevant to empowerment, social and economic inclusion entrepreneurship, personal development, professional development, leadership and Brazilian labor market. All programs are carried out by ISAE's student and teachers volunteers.
The first cycle had nearly 17 refugees and migrants from Angola, Haiti, Sudan and Syria. Outcomes are listed below:
Three participants were hired in the local labor market.
One participant is waiting for a diploma validation to get hired in the local labor market.
Two Angolan participants were selected for the second phase of the Desafio Paran da Aliana Empreendedora (Entrepreneurial Alliance's Paran Challenge ), whose business models were developed in the classroom.
A participant from Guinea-Bissau got a scholarship for the gastronomy course promoted by Gastromotiva.
Three participants got a scholarship for the undergraduate technological course in Management Processes at ISAE.
Arrangements for Capacity-Building and Technology Transfer
The school aims to maintain the project in 2017, once it is focused on a social demand that lacks public policies for full regulation, and helps create opportunity for minorities. Furthermore, its scope extends beyond the geographic limits of the city of Curitiba, for it has an impact on the participants' families who remained in their countries.
Coordination mechanisms/governance structure
ISAE has always assumed a posture that goes beyond its work as a business school by recognizing its commitment with the society as a whole. Thus, by engaging with the MDGs, and later the SDGs, the institute focused on creating new opportunities for citizens, beyond the school borders.
Therefore, in 2002 the institution launched a volunteer program with the proposal to assist social and non-governmental organizations to structure their management and strategic planning. Since then, every year the Uan Volunteer program selects a group of NGO managers to participate in training program. The workshops cover topics such as leadership and people management, marketing and social media, fundraising and sustainability.
In 2016, ISAE identified a new opportunity to engage with society before the migration crisis which also affected Brazil and the city of Curitiba. According to a document of the National Refugee Committee (Conare), in May 2016 the country received more than 8,000 refugees from 79 countries mainly Syria, Lebanon, Colombia, Congo, Iraq, Liberia, Nigerian, Morocco and Sierra Leone.
Seeking to give this people a chance to restart, the project Uan Refugees was incorporated in the Uan Volunteer program. In partnership with the NGO Lynion (School of Integration that promotes training for migrants and refugees, in order to prepare them for the reality of the national market.)
The starting point for this project was a voluntary action that started at ISAE's class room of a corporative program, when a student who worked at a dental health company and its group promoted a social action in favor of the oral health of immigrants residing in Curitiba. The action counted with more than 50 volunteers and involved supporters, sponsors and employees of different companies, in addition to ISAE and the Federal University of Paran.
Another positive point of the project is its low cost, due to a strong mobilization of partners and volunteers. Therefore, it has great replicability potential.
