Description/achievement of initiative
Stanford University's Sustainable Urban Systems Initiative (SUS), consisting of students, staff, and faculty across the university, will work with local stakeholders, including municipal and county governments, agencies, utilities, businesses, nonprofits, and community groups, in the San Francisco Bay Area to make collective progress on the SDGs.
Implementation methodologies
SUS will undertake projects with local stakeholders and students through project-based learning (PBL) courses, which are at the core of the SUS graduate degree, and through independent projects, which students who have taken the PBL course can participate in. Projects will have clearly defined scopes of work when they are for local stakeholders. In addition, research assistants will continually develop and improve a SDG Data Dashboard for the Bay Area which will be hosted by SUS on Stanford servers. The Dashboard will be accessible through online platforms.
Arrangements for Capacity-Building and Technology Transfer
SUS will convene stakeholders regularly on campus and meet with stakeholders directly in communities to build understanding and capacity to use the SDG localization tools. SUS will produce extensive online resources open to the public. SUS will act as a data repository for multiple stakeholders, especially where there is sensitive data.
Coordination mechanisms/governance structure
SUS is coordinated by a core group of staff and faculty at Stanford and works with different students year to year, including through its own SUS graduate degree. SUS will interact with local stakeholders through Memoranda of Understanding and Project Charters. SUS raises funds through various internal and external sources.
