Description/achievement of initiative
It is to collaborate with Educational/Social Institutions and relevant agencies to give non-formal education; sensitize and educate children, Women and Youth on Social Issues. We work with Bayero University Kano, Agencies, states and Federal Ministries of Women Affairs, Federal Ministry of Finance, Religious and Community leaders and others. It is also to advocate for implementation of policies. The initiative is also used to strengthen the capacity of women and youth with skills for empowerment and enhanced their self-reliance. Finally to support girl/child education and ensure conducive learning environment that improves the educational standard of all children in schools
Implementation methodologies
This is a revolving project designed to provide special learning, basic literacy, numeracy and capacity building to underprivileged citizenry; Girls of school age 9 to 18 years, young women aged 18 to 49 and children of school age not in school, refuges/immigrants; they are the target groups. The ICT training is however extended to all gender. The literacy and non-formal education is the foundation process of the project towards creating a sustainable livelihood for the beneficiaries so that in the long run they are not only self-reliant, productive, employable but are also capable of employing and training others. The innovative project is working as an agent of change in the communities and to also serve as an attitudinal-cultural transformation and creation of linkages.
To achieve these, Avabe Initiative has 4 outputs through which it works with educational institutions, media houses, focal groups, traditional/ religious leaders, government agencies/ ministries and NGOs. The outputs with their tasks/activities highlighted below:
Output 1: Increased demand for literacy, capacity building and entrepreneurial: The focus of this output is to increase demand for Universal Basic Education (UBE), Non Formal and Special Classes literacy programmes; Light skills and social inclusion services within a strengthened Educational and Social system. The approach involves: Creation of community engagement that supports the community and the Local Government Authorities to promote a sustainable community system that links up with education, social providers and policy makers. Social inclusion services to increase transparency and accountability. We work to see a demonstrated shift in social norms relating to home and community proceedings, suggesting a growing consensus among the women group, men and boys; community leaders preparedness for girls and women emerging exclusion/violence and readiness for action. Output 2 - Improved information generation with knowledge being used in policy and practice:
Output 3 - Improved delivery of literacy, skills and entrepreneurial activities/services via the strengthened Literacy Centres (LC) and direct participation: Literacy, light skills and social inclusion indicators of children, girls and women in the northern states are among the lowest in the world.

Arrangements for Capacity-Building and Technology Transfer
The Information Communication Technology (ICT) training we offer are in duration of three to six months programmes It is designed to provide certificate and diploma certificate courses to Local Government staffs , teachers, women and youths and to all gender. The literacy and non-formal education is the foundation process of the project towards creating a sustainable livelihood for the beneficiaries so that in the long run they are not only self-reliant, productive, employable but are also capable of employing and training others. We organize and train workers of Ministries and Agencies. We also train our facilitators in conjunction with the relevant authorities. We engaged the services of consultants to handle this aspect the activities.
Coordination mechanisms/governance structure
Avabe Initiative is governed by a Board of Trustees, which meets quarterly and for its Annual General Meeting (AGM), once in a year. Our Finance unit and the independent Auditor monitors the finances of the organisation, internal and external audit are carried out at least quarterly, and make recommendations to the Board of Trustees. The Board of Trustees takes the major strategic decisions for the organisation. Every year Trustees are invited to visit programmes in the field to ensure they are fully informed about Avabe Initiatives activities at States level. Day-to-day operational decision-making is delegated to the Chief Executive Officer, who, with other Executive team of Avabe Initiative for Community Development, runs the organisation. At states level we have the team coordinators and the programme officers that oversees the field works along with the facilitators. We also have the Administrative staff that gives administrative and financial supports to the technical team. The entire operations are guided and controlled by the Administrative and financial manuals; they are made available to all staff to study. The activities relating to the primary and secondary beneficiaries are also guided by these manuals. We carryout Mid-year and Annual Evaluation of projects while Internal and External auditing of financial and administrative records are also done in the same manner respectively.
