Description/achievement of initiative
Code for All is tackling youth unemployment by recruiting brilliant minds, which couldn’t find a job in their respective areas of training, transforming them over 14 weeks and +650 hours of intense immersion, into Software Developers. We work with unemployed people from all types of academic and professional background, with no relevant experience in programming.
Code for All commits to teach 740 adults (670 peple below 35 and 70 people over 35 years old), in differente Portuguese municipalities, between 2017 and 2019.
The main sources of financing are a Social Impact Bond (FCG, IEFP, LIS, ASSOP), local governments and students.
Implementation methodologies
According do the European Commission, Europe alone could face a shortage of up to 900,000 skilled ICT workers by 2020.
On one hand there is an extremely high youth unemployment rate, on the other hand there is an enormous employment opportunity in the Information Technology sector. This is both a big problem and a huge opportunity.
From 2017 to 2019, in 4 different Portuguese municipalities (Lisboa, Fundão, Praia da Vitória in Azores and Gaia), Code for All will transform 740 unemployed people (670 peple below 35 years old and 70 people over 35 years old) into junior software developers, throughout 37 bootcamps. The budget considered includes the 740 unemployed people mentioned. The bootcamps will take place in the campus that already exist (Lisboa and Fundão) and in new campus that will be created (Praia da Vitória and Gaia).
The bootcamps have a unique selection process, with several phases, which guarantees that the best and most motivated candidates are chosen. Students will also be supported during their job search, until they are placed in a company as software developers.
These students will learn the basics of programming and computer science concepts that will let them create and explore their future.
Besides the financial support from the Social Impact Bond (FCG, IEFP, LIS, ASSOP) and local governments, we have a new source of revenue: since May 2017, Lisbon Bootcamps’ students are paying for their studies with Code for All.
