Description/achievement of initiative
FAO is committed to strengthen the strategic multi-stakeholder alliance, around the thematic area of youth in the rural economy, which advocates, ensures policy convergence, stimulates innovative thinking and mobilizes resources for more and better investments in rural youth employment. FAO will actively promote the visibility of the Global Initiative on Decent Jobs for Youth and advocate for decent rural employment for youth.
Implementation methodologies
Creating decent jobs for youth in rural areas is a global concern which requires the highest possible level of policy attention and action. This is why FAO builds multi-stakeholder alliances and advocates to increase action and impact on youth employment together with national institutions, the private sector, the UN System and other multilateral organizations, academia, representatives of the social partners and of youth organizations. Concretely, FAO advocates for high-level policy commitment and action on decent rural youth employment during relevant global and regional conferences, events, and campaigns. FAO promotes the thematic area of youth employment in rural areas during high-level consultations (such as the FAO Regional Conference for Africa with all member states of FAO’s Africa Region present or the United Nations Economic and Social Council (ECOSOC) Youth Forum), during capacity development workshops (such as the Workshop ‘Decent Jobs for Rural Youth in Southern Africa (SFS) with 16 countries present) or in the context of programmes and activities (such as the FAO Special Programme on Youth Employment in Africa and the G20 Initiative for Rural Youth Employment). Furthermore, FAO supports regional and sub-regional organizations, such as the AfDB-IITA-AGRA programme Empowering Novel Agribusiness-Led Employment for Youth (ENABLE Youth) loan facility, the New Partnership for Africa’s Development (NEPAD) and the Caribbean Community (CARICOM), to develop specific policies and strategies for youth employment in agriculture.
