Description/achievement of initiative
SASU Lda started an English Literacy Club at Gungunhana School. 2 teachers are paid a stipend to teach 32 children, both girls and boys from Grades 2 to 7. The curriculum is rich, incorporating numeracy, environmental science and general knowledge. SASU provided all learning materials and uniforms. Field trips are part of the curriculum. SDJET provides oversight as the initiative is in a primary school. As this is a pilot project, we would like to run with it for 5 years till our oldesr student write their final exams to see how successful we have been.
Implementation methodologies
SASU lda is funding the initiative 100%. The funds come from work carried out during normal operations. We are an occupational safety, health and environmental management consultancy. We also have an events management division.
Arrangements for Capacity-Building and Technology Transfer
Teachers were trained in one session on the curriculum. We will have a teacher exchange programme in coordination with the Embassy of Zimbabwe, as the MD is a Zimbabwean and suffered personally from the inability to read, write or speak Portuguese before taking the initiative to learn.
The student teachers will assist in the English Club and teaching English at the School, whilst hosted by a Mozambican family for a period of 3 to 6 weeks.
Some students will also have the opportunity to live in a Zimbabwean family and experience the culture whilst learning and speaking English. The same will also happen when the students get to host English speakers in their homes.
Coordination mechanisms/governance structure
SASU Lda is funding the project as part of its CSR. Permission was sought from the government through SDJET and approved. The Embassy of Zimbabwe is also aware as we intend to have student teacher exchanges before the end of 2018. In 2019 we will have a cultural exchange program for students.
For now the students have 3 lessons a week each lasting 2 hours. The lessons are delivered as per the curriculum developed by SASU Lda. The purpose is that noone should be excluded from gainful employment because of the inability to read, write or speak English. Most learners come from very poor backgrounds so the lessons are entirely free for all learners.
