Engaging Local Government in Sindh for Effective SGDs
Description/achievement of initiative

Sustainable Environment and Development Foundation is Non Government Organization based in Hyderabad Sindh. SEDF has working relationship with national and international development agencies on DRR, CBDRM and Climate Change. Currently SEDF engaged local government on making cities resilient to develop sustainable mechanism living the life better with strong coordination to combat urban DRR. To make difference following objectives would be focused as: 1. Capacity Building of Municple Authorities 2. To make sustainable and viable cities 3. Urban Forestation 4. Urban Housing

Implementation methodologies

SEDF will engage authorities of local government as elected representatives, key functionaries, civil society and urban planners. The elected representatives of local government including female legislators would be engaged for sessions to ensure their effective role in implementation. There are following key stakeholders with their assigned tasked to be engaged as : 1. Local Government : To ensure their implementation through legislation and laws 2. Municipal Corporations: To ensure their role in designing sustainable plans of the cities to make these viable, sustainable and effective for generations. The plans would include housing, industrialization, infrastructures, and services being provided as health, education, water and sanitation and greening the cities 3. Functionaries: The key officials as Divisional Commissioner and Deputy Commissioner would be engaged to develop master plan of sustainable cities. Women Representatives of local government would be the key stakeholders to be engaged to monitor the activities being carried out by Local Government and concerned offices. Since last many years our cities are facing rising temperature therefore this affects labor and ages. The key activities would be designed to aware urban communities to avoid heatwaves through precautionary measures.

Arrangements for Capacity-Building and Technology Transfer

Presentations on sustainable cities and urban resilience would given to key stakeholders of Hyderabad. Messages of the awareness would be disseminated though social networks. Public gatherings and coordination meetings would be organized in coordination with local government and corporate agencies.

Coordination mechanisms/governance structure

Coordination mechanism would be adapted engaging local government, municipal corporations, divisional offices as functionaries. Since the urbanization is increasing in Pakistan, Hyderabad is facing this increasing trend with adverse affects. People have less opportunities to take fresh breath, scarcity of job opportunities, less infrastructure and transport facilities. Sustainable health facilities are also missing part in the growing urbanization. Water and sanitation are major issues in these cities. Hyderabad is densely populated cities which is facing the same issues and have to develop sustainable plan for the growing challenges. There are key stakeholders would be engaged to develop strong coordination to make city resilient and sustainable with offered facilities as human needs in 21st century. Following offices would be brought under coordination mechanism for achieving desirable goals. 1. Hyderabad Development Authority 2. Municipal Corporation 3. Commissioner Office 4. Corporate Sector
