Bamboo Centre
Description/achievement of initiative

The Pacific Islands Development Forum considers Bamboo as an incredible resource in the Green Economy. There have been a few attempts in the Pacific in bamboo related activities but many have not been successful. It is essential to establish a support system to provide those trained with assistance when they are faced with problems in their endeavours. The establishment of national Bamboo Centres proposes to do just that.

Implementation methodologies

This initiative will employ a number of methodologies including construction, research, capacity building and technological transfer.

Arrangements for Capacity-Building and Technology Transfer

The Bamboo Centre will run short courses in propagation and a number of applications for bamboo. It is expected to support technology transfer from a number of Asian countries with advanced technology related to this industry.

Coordination mechanisms/governance structure

The Pacific Islands Development Forum will coordinate the project with participation of government stakeholder ministries and departments, the private sector, educational and research institutions, projects and community groups. A steering committee representing these stakeholders will guide the work of the project and the center itself.
