Description/achievement of initiative
The research internship programme was launched by Consumers India for students pursuing higher education on 15th September, 2012 and since then 75 studies have been completed. Important consumer issues, including issues relating to sustainable development, have been studied under the able guidance of experienced mentors. These studies are used to create awareness regarding important issues affecting our lives, and also for advocacy campaigns. Several issues, highlighted by interns in their studies, have been taken up with the concerned authorities at the highest level.
Implementation methodologies
Consumers India organises 3-4 groups (batches) of research internship in a year. Duration of such internships is generally 6 weeks. About 25 research studies are undertaken each year. Applications are invited through social media (Facebook page/group, blog, website, etc.) as well as through emails to large number of people.
Arrangements for Capacity-Building and Technology Transfer
Students pursuing undergraduate or graduate programme in any discipline from recognised institutions in India, having interest in consumer issues, are eligible for internship. Interested candidates are required to fill out a form with complete and correct details; their suitability for internship with Consumers India is judged on the basis of their application. An induction programme is organised at the start of the internship batch. After the induction process is over, the intern is assigned a study to be completed by a group of 3-4 interns during the period of internship. The subject of this research study is decided in consultation with the intern and is commensurate with her/his age, education and area of interest. Each group is mentored by experts in Consumers India. The progress of the assignment is monitored on weekly basis. Interns are required to visit the office of Consumers India at least once a week for interaction with their mentors. Many more interactions take place online and through telephone. At the end of this Internship, each group submits its research study, duly approved by their mentor. In addition to above, interns take up voluntary assignments to raise awareness regarding concerns and activities of Consumers India, which are not very different from the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). After evaluation by experts of Consumers India, the findings emanating from such research studies are shared with the concerned national and international authorities. In all such communications, full credit is given to the contribution made by interns. The complete list of studies undertaken by our interns so far may be seen on the following link: http://drjayashreegupta.blogspot.in/2013/02/studies-conducted-by-interns.html
