Sustainable Solutions at the University of Pennsylvania
Description/achievement of initiative

Sustainable Solutions is a 501c3 nonprofit that strives to facilitate and encourage localized solutions to the SDGs. Sustainable Solutions, which is run entirely by students at the University of Pennsylvania, will be hosting a Spring 2019 competition that will invite Philadelphia high school and college students to tackle the UN Sustainable Development Goals in the local context of Philadelphia. Our 4 focus SDGs are 3, 4, 6, and 7. Thus, we have made strategic partnerships that provide expert viewpoints on these 4 target areas.

Implementation methodologies

We have made a plethora of media partnerships to broadcast our competition to Philadelphia high school and college students. We have recruited a Marketing & Design team, as well as Wharton 101 consultants, who will help us with strategic marketing efforts. On the finance side, we have made, and are currently building, sponsorships with Penn-based organizations, corporate entities, and NGOs. During each week in November, we will be hosting a workshop that focuses on our 4 target SDGs: 3, 4, 6, and 7. Therein, we will invite speakers from our partner organizations to provide expert perspectives on Philadelphia's most pressing sustainability issues. After these workshops, we will host a kickoff event on November 30, 2018 that will officially launch the competition. From November to mid-February (when project proposals are due), our team at Sustainable Solutions will match competitors with mentors and provide all necessary resources for their projects. Finally, in mid-March, we will host our inaugural competition at the Kleinman Energy Forum. Winners of our competition will go on to implement their projects in Philadelphia with the help of Sustainable Solutions and our various implementation partners, including Contrary Capital, the Philadelphia Office of Sustainability, the Penn Office of Sustainability, and the Philadelphia Department of Public Health.

Arrangements for Capacity-Building and Technology Transfer

Coordination mechanisms/governance structure

Sustainable Solutions is entirely student founded and run, with about 20 Penn students spanning the College of Arts & Sciences, Penn Engineering, the Wharton School, and the Nursing School. Alongside, we have several expert advisors, including Dr. Eugenie Birch (President of the UN General Assembly of Partners and Director of the Penn Institute for Urban Research) and Joanne Spigonardo (Director, Wharton Initiative for Global Environmental Leadership). The leading principles of our governance are as follows: humility, inclusivity, and efficiency. We have no hierarchy of power that subordinates members, so every team member is contributing in equal parts to our ultimate goal of localizing the SDGs. Our organization is partitioned into the following teams: Strategy, Partnerships & Relations, Marketing & Design, Finance, Health, Education, Water, and Energy.
