Description/achievement of initiative
The Reservas Votorantim, through a business model dedicated to the management of environmental assets, stands out as an innovative initiative, which seeks to institutionalize, structure and develop areas with potential to become environmental reserves aiming to promote and generate shared value from standing forest conservation and Biodiversity and Ecosystem Services (BES) protection; promote environmental conservation and ensure natural resources to the next generations; transform natural assets into innovative and sustainable business model.
Implementation methodologies
The process of recognizing the area as an environmental reserve begins with the owner's awareness of the importance of conserving the area for the integrity of local / regional biodiversity. In the case of the Legado das ÃÂÂÂguas and Legado Verdes do Cerrado, the company is Companhia Brasileira de AlumÃÂÂÂnio S.A. (CBA S.A.).
Afterwards, studies are carried out in order to identify the potential of the area, which would enable the implementation of the activities of the new economy (ecotourism, legal reserve, biotechnology, nursery of native plants, scientific research, among others). At the same time, environmental, social and economic diagnoses are applied to the territory in which the area is inserted, since the objective is that the activities developed by the future environmental reserve are in synergy with the dynamics of the territory.
Finally, a Protocol of Intentions, in which the owner undertakes to protect the area, is signed in partnership with the local / regional public authority. This document recognizes the area as an environmental reserve and institutes shared management with the government.
Arrangements for Capacity-Building and Technology Transfer
The initiative was built as a model for the management of private environmental reserves. At first, the Legado das ÃÂÂÂguas, Brazil's largest private reserve of Atlantic Forest, was the first area, managed by Reservas Votorantim, in which the environmental asset management model was implemented.
Following the positive results achieved by the Legado das ÃÂÂÂguas, the Reservas Votorantim took on the new challenge of managing area of Legado Verdes do Cerrado, putting in synergy the development of the activities of the new economy and the activities of the traditional economy (agriculture and livestock), which are developed in part of the area.
In addition, as this initiative is reapplied, as was the case with the Legado Verdes do Cerrado, more areas with potential for biodiversity conservation become private environmental reserves, also dedicated to the development of poles of scientific research, to which subsidize the necessary basis for the formation of actions and p
Coordination mechanisms/governance structure
The Reservas Votorantim is a company designed within the ideology of the new economy and, therefore, acts in an integrated way to the territory with focus on the sustainable development. In this sense, the Reservas shares with the public authority the management of two environmental reserves - Legado dos ÃÂÂÂguas and Legado Verdes do Cerrado - located in the Atlantic Forest and Cerrado biome. This shared management structure was designed, for each reserve, by signing a Protocol of Intentions in partnership with the government of the respective state in which the area is located.
The model of shared management of environmental reserves (environmental assets) is a premise of Reservas Votorantim' way of acting, since it is believed that the protection of the area and the process of raising awareness of the local population regarding the importance of their conservation for biodiversity become more effective with the legal backing and the support of the public power. In addition, the integration of the environmental reserve to the dynamics of the territory is of interest, since the development of its activities is focused on the generation of shared value between the forest, the territory and the company.
